01 / Overview

How do I convert a GIF to a video?

Use this GIF to video converter to choose an animated GIF, select MP4 or WebM, then adjust quality, size, repeats, and the transparency background. It preserves the GIF's frame timing while creating a silent video locally in your browser, with no upload, account, or watermark.

How to use

  1. 01
    Choose an animated GIF

Drop a GIF into the converter or use the sample animation to explore the settings.

  2. 02
    Choose MP4 or WebM

Pick MP4 for broad compatibility or WebM for a web-focused file, then set quality and output size.

  3. 03
    Set repeats and background

Choose how many times the GIF cycle should be copied into the video and select a color for transparent pixels.

  4. 04
    Convert and download

Start the local conversion, preview the result, and download the finished video file.

Who it's for

  • Web developers can replace bandwidth-heavy GIF animations with compact video assets for landing pages and documentation.
  • Social media teams can turn a GIF into an MP4 accepted by platforms that do not support direct GIF uploads.
  • Product teams can reuse animated interface demos in slide decks, video editors, and help centers.
  • Community managers can convert reaction GIFs into shareable silent clips without sending the original to a conversion server.

The converter reads the GIF's frame delays instead of forcing every frame to the same speed. A browser version of FFmpeg loads only when you start conversion, decodes each animation frame, composites transparent pixels over your chosen color, and encodes a silent H.264 or VP8 video.

Video codecs can reuse visual information between frames, so animated GIFs with large or photographic frames often become smaller as MP4 or WebM. Very tiny GIFs can be an exception because a video container and its keyframes add overhead.

FAQ

Is my GIF uploaded when I convert it to video?

No. The GIF is read from a local browser file object and processed by a WebAssembly video engine in the current tab. The engine files download on first use, but your source GIF and generated video are not sent to that host or stored on a conversion server.

Is this GIF to video converter free?

Yes. You can inspect, resize, repeat, convert, preview, and download a GIF as MP4 or WebM without an account, subscription, watermark, or server upload quota. Browser memory and your device's processing speed still set practical limits for very large or long animations.

What is the GIF file size limit?

The converter uses a conservative limit of 200 MB on most desktop devices and 80 MB on phones or lower-memory devices. GIF decoding and video encoding can need several times the source file size in working memory, so large frame dimensions can matter more than the compressed GIF size.

Should I choose MP4 or WebM for a GIF?

Choose MP4 for social media, messaging, presentations, and the widest playback support. Choose WebM when you control a modern web embed and prefer an open web video format. Both outputs are silent because GIF cannot contain an audio track.

Will the video loop like the original GIF?

The downloaded file plays for the number of cycles selected in the Repeat control. Video files do not carry GIF's automatic loop instruction, so a player may stop at the end. For websites, use a muted video element with the loop and playsinline attributes.

What happens to transparent areas in the GIF?

MP4 and the WebM profile used here are exported without alpha transparency. The converter fills transparent pixels with your selected background color before encoding. Choose a color that matches the page, slide, or editor where the finished video will appear.

Why can a converted video be larger than a small GIF?

Video adds container metadata and periodic full keyframes, which can outweigh compression savings for a tiny icon or one-frame GIF. Conversion is most useful for longer, larger, or visually detailed animations. The result panel shows the exact size difference before you download.

Does converting GIF to video improve image quality?

No. Video conversion preserves the visible animation but cannot recreate colors or detail already lost to GIF's palette. Use the High quality setting to reduce additional encoding loss, and keep the original size unless you specifically need a smaller frame.
